Visual effects add an extra level of dynamism to any video production, allowing you to take your projects beyond the basics and create something truly unique. In this article, we’ll walk you through some of the most popular visual effects available, and how you can use them to enhance your video footage with just a few simple tools.

Chromakey

Chromakey, or green screen/blue screen as it’s sometimes known, is a visual effect technique where a specific color (usually green or blue) is used as a background while the foreground of the frame is replaced with something else. For example, if you have a green screen in the background of a scene, you can replace it with a digital background, or even another video clip. This is a great way to add depth and drama to your videos, or to create a surreal environment.

To use chromakey, you’ll need a digital video editing program like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. You’ll also need a physical green or blue screen background to film in front of. Once you have these two things, it’s fairly straightforward to use chromakey. Simply select the color you want to remove from the video, and then replace it with the desired background.

Motion Tracking

Motion tracking is a visual effect technique that allows you to let objects move in relation to the camera’s movements. This is most often done with a digital object, such as a title or logo, but you can also use motion tracking to move individual elements in a scene. This can be used to create dynamic scenes and add an extra layer of interactivity to your videos.

To use motion tracking, you’ll need a motion tracking program such as Adobe After Effects or Syntheyes. You’ll also need to film your scene with a camera that can capture motion, such as a DSLR or a GoPro. Once you have your footage and motion tracking program ready to go, you simply need to track the motion of the object you want to move, and then place it into your scene.

Color Grading

Color grading is another visual effect technique that can help you create a truly unique look for your videos. This effect is used to adjust the hue, saturation, and luminance of an image, or to change the overall color of a scene.
