Drone Footage: The Moves That Work and the Ones Overused

Aerial footage is now easy to acquire and mostly interchangeable, and the two facts are connected. The equipment made a specific set of moves effortless, those moves became the default, and a default move communicates nothing about the particular place it is showing.

Improving aerial material is therefore not a technical problem. It is a question of what the move is for.

The Overused Moves

Two shots dominate, and both were remarkable when they were difficult.

The rise and reveal, where the aircraft ascends over an obstruction to expose a landmark or a landscape. It works when the obstruction is meaningful and the reveal is a surprise. It fails when it is simply an increase in altitude, which is most of the time.

The orbit, circling a subject at a constant radius. It works when the subject is worth examining from several sides and when the orbit reveals something as it moves. It fails as a way of filling time around a building that looks the same from every angle.

Neither is wrong. Both have been used so heavily that a viewer recognises them as drone footage rather than as information about a place, and recognition of the technique is a failure of the shot.

The Moves That Carry Meaning

The distinction that matters is whether a move reveals a relationship.

The connecting move. Flying from one thing to another so their relationship becomes clear — the house and the coast, the factory and the town, the road and the mountain it climbs. This is aerial photography’s genuine advantage over every other position, and it is underused.

The follow. Tracking a subject through a landscape at their level or slightly above. It makes the subject the point and the landscape the context, which is the correct hierarchy for most narrative purposes.

The reveal by parallax. Moving laterally so a foreground element passes across a background, exposing what was hidden behind it. It produces depth in a way an ascent does not.

The top-down. Looking straight down turns a landscape into a graphic composition of shapes, patterns and lines, and it is the one aerial position that produces images no other camera can make.

The descent into a scene. Coming down towards a subject rather than away from it, which delivers a viewer into a place instead of removing them from it.

Flying for Usable Material

The practical craft is narrower than it appears.

Slower than feels right. Movement reads faster on screen than it feels on the controller. Almost all inexperienced aerial footage is too fast, and the correction is deliberate: slow the move until it feels tedious to fly.

One move per shot. A shot that ascends while rotating while translating while tilting is unusable, because an editor cannot cut into or out of it. A single clean move with a defined start and end can be cut anywhere.

Start and stop recording outside the move. Recording begins before the move and ends after it, so the editor has handles at both ends.

Smooth inputs. Gradual stick movements rather than corrections, and acceptance that the first attempt is a rehearsal.

A plan for the move before taking off. Battery life is short and the turnaround is real, which means a limited number of attempts. Knowing what the move is before launching is what converts a battery into a shot rather than into exploration.

Light and Weather Decide the Shot

There is no possibility of adding light to a landscape, which makes the hour the single most consequential variable.

Low sun produces long shadows and reveals surface texture, which is what makes terrain read as three-dimensional. Midday sun from overhead flattens everything into a map. The period after sunset gives gradation in the sky and illumination in a settlement, and it is the best time for anything containing built environment.

Wind is the operational limit and matters more at altitude than at ground level. It affects stability, it drains battery capacity as the aircraft fights it, and it is the most common reason a planned aerial day produces nothing.

Composition From the Air

The same principles apply and two are worth stating because they are easy to forget when the view is novel.

Something in the foreground. An aerial frame of a distant landscape with nothing near the camera is flat. An element in the near field creates depth and gives the eye an entry point.

Lines and patterns. Roads, rivers, field boundaries, coastlines and structures form the composition from above, and looking for them is more productive than looking for subjects.

Altitude is a compositional variable rather than a boast. Many of the best aerial shots are made a few metres above head height, where the perspective is unfamiliar but the subject is still legible.

The Regulatory Half

None of the above is available without the flight being lawful, and commercial aerial work is regulated.

Certification appropriate to the operation, aircraft registration, authorisation where the airspace requires it, compliance with rules on flying near people and structures, and aviation liability insurance are the framework in every jurisdiction this reference covers, with the specifics differing by country and changing over time.
