Green Screen Video Production: The Post Bill Is Set on the Day
A green screen composite is finished in post and decided on the shooting floor. That inversion is the single most useful thing to understand about the format: nearly every expensive compositing problem is an artefact of a lighting or wardrobe decision that took a few minutes on the day and takes days to unpick afterwards.
The equipment is unremarkable. The discipline is not.
What a Keyer Actually Needs
Software separating a subject from a backing is looking for a colour that is consistent and distinct from everything meant to be kept. Consistency is the operative word — the screen does not need to be bright, and it does not need to be a particular shade. It needs to be the same across the whole frame.
That produces the two governing requirements.
The screen is lit separately from the subject. A single light doing both jobs produces a hot centre and dark corners, and every unevenness becomes a place where the key either eats into the subject or leaves a fringe of backing behind.
The subject stands well away from it. Distance stops the coloured light bouncing off the fabric and wrapping around the subject’s edges, and it lets the subject be lit as though they were somewhere else entirely — which is, after all, what the composite is claiming.
Physical condition matters more than most briefs expect. Wrinkles are shadows. Seams are lines. Footprints and scuffs on a floor section are variations in colour. A screen that has been stretched, taped flat and kept clean is worth more than a more expensive one hung badly.
Spill, and Why It Is the Expensive Part
Spill is the green light landing on the subject from the screen, and it is visible on hair, on shoulders, on the rims of glasses and anywhere a surface is even slightly reflective. It is also the defect a client cannot name but always notices, because a subject with a faint green edge reads as pasted on.
Distance is the primary defence. Backlight is the second — a light behind the subject, from the opposite side, restores an edge that reads as belonging to the new background rather than the old one. Spill suppression in software is the third and the weakest, because removing green from a person’s hair also removes it from anything genuinely that colour, and skin tones are unforgiving about the attempt.
Wardrobe, Props and the Things That Cannot Be Keyed
The wardrobe conversation happens before the shoot or it happens as a problem.
Anything the colour of the backing disappears. Anything that reflects the backing acquires it — patent shoes, metal frames, a polished tabletop, a laptop lid. Fine repeating patterns can behave unpredictably at the edge of a matte. Transparent and semi-transparent materials, from a glass of water to a chiffon sleeve, are genuinely hard, because a keyer has to decide how much background shows through and no single setting is right for the whole shot.
Hair is the permanent difficulty. Loose fine hair against a backing is where automated keys give up and manual work begins, which is one reason presenters in this format are frequently styled more tightly than they otherwise would be.
None of this is a rule against those choices. It is a cost, and it should be a known one.
Matching the Subject to a Background That Does Not Exist Yet
The most common failure in a finished composite is not a bad matte. It is a subject that is lit plausibly and lit wrongly for the place they are supposed to be.
If the background has a window on the left, the key light is on the left. If the background is a warm interior, the subject is not lit with cold daylight. If the background is outdoors on an overcast day, hard shadows on the subject’s face are a contradiction the viewer registers without being able to explain.
The same applies to camera position. A background photographed from standing height does not accept a subject shot from below, and a background with strong perspective needs a lens that agrees with it. Where the background will move, the camera move has to be tracked, which means markers on the screen and a shot planned as a tracking shot rather than as a happy accident.
The workable practice is to know the background before the shoot. A rough version, a still, even a reference image is enough to set the lighting and the height correctly.
Floors, Full Bodies and the Extra Half of the Problem
A head-and-shoulders composite needs a wall. A full-body composite needs a floor, and the floor is where these shoots become substantially more work.
The screen has to continue into the ground plane without a visible edge, the floor section takes wear from feet and stands, and it is lit at a different angle from the vertical surface. Contact shadows — the shadow a person casts where they stand — are what tells a viewer the subject is standing on something, and a composite without them floats. Whether those are preserved from the shoot or created in post is a decision, and preserving them is usually cheaper.
Recording Format Is a Compositing Decision
Compression discards colour information first, and the colour information it discards is exactly what a keyer uses to find an edge. Heavily compressed footage produces mattes with ragged, blocky edges that need manual repair, and no amount of care on the floor fully compensates.
Recording with reduced compression, or in a format that retains more colour detail, is the cheapest available improvement to a composite. It costs storage. Manual matte repair costs days.
When Not to Do It At All
Green screen earns its keep when the background is impossible, dangerous, imaginary, unaffordable, or required to change between versions of the same recording — a corporate message re-versioned for six markets, a presenter placed inside a product visualisation, a location that does not exist.
It does not earn its keep as a replacement for a room. Shooting a person against fabric to place them in an office is spending post budget to recreate something the crew could have walked into, and the result rarely survives comparison with the real thing.
What Sets the Cost
The lighting time, since an even screen and a separately lit subject is a longer setup than a normal interior. The space, because the required distance between subject, screen and camera makes this a format with a minimum room size. Whether a floor is involved. The wardrobe and prop constraints, and whether they are accepted or worked around. Then the post, which is the variable with the widest range: a clean, well-separated, well-recorded key is quick, and a poorly lit one shot on compressed footage with loose hair and a glass of water is a hand-worked job.
This reference states no prices. What is publishable is the technical detail: the camera’s recording formats and their stated colour sampling, the delivery specification of the platform the finished piece is going to, and the compositing application’s own documentation on what its keyer expects. Those three explain more about a quote than any figure would.

Why does the subject need to stand away from the screen?
Two reasons at once. Distance stops coloured light bouncing off the screen onto the back of the subject, which is what produces a green fringe that resists removal. Does the screen have to be perfectly lit?
Evenly lit, which is a different requirement from brightly lit. A keyer copes easily with a backing that is consistent across the frame and struggles with one that is bright in the centre and falling off at the edges. Wrinkles, seams and shadows on the fabric all cost time later.
What should the subject not wear?
Anything the colour of the screen, anything with a green or blue cast under the lights, reflective surfaces that pick up the backing, and fine repeating patterns that struggle at the edge of a matte. Transparent materials, loose hair and fine detail are where a key is won or lost, so they get discussed before wardrobe is chosen.
Is blue ever better than green?
Yes, when the subject contains green, when skin tones need to stay entirely untouched by spill, or when the lighting level is low — blue needs more light but contaminates skin less. Green is the default because sensors are more sensitive to it, not because it is universally correct.
Can a phone or a webcam be keyed?
Poorly and at a cost. Heavily compressed footage discards colour detail in a way that damages exactly the edges a keyer relies on, so the matte comes out ragged and the fix is manual work. Recording with less compression, or at all in a higher-quality format, is the cheapest possible improvement to a composite.
When is a real location the better decision?
Whenever the background is a real place that exists and is accessible. A key is worth doing when the background is impossible, dangerous, imaginary, has to change between versions, or has to be identical across dozens of separately shot pieces. Replacing a room the crew could simply have filmed in is spending post budget to recover something that was free.
