Car Video Production: Tracking Rigs, Closed Roads and Reflections
Automotive filming has two problems that no other product format shares. The subject is heavy, fast and capable of causing serious harm, and its surfaces are mirrors that show everything the production is trying to hide.
Both are solvable, and the techniques for solving them are well established. What they are not is improvisable, which is why automotive work carries more planning per shot than almost any other commercial format.
Filming Something That Moves
Three approaches cover most moving-vehicle photography, and they produce different results.
Tracking vehicle. A camera car carrying a stabilised arm or a mounted head travels alongside, ahead of or behind the subject vehicle. It gives the most natural sense of motion and the widest choice of angle, and it requires two vehicles moving in coordination at speed, which is why it carries the heaviest safety and permission requirements.
Rigs on the car itself. Mounts attached to the vehicle — bonnet, door, wing, boom arm — produce the locked-on perspectives that read as speed and intimacy. The requirements are secure mounting, an understanding of what the mounts do to the car’s handling, and a plan for the wind and vibration at the speeds involved.
Static car, moving environment. The vehicle does not move at all: the background is supplied by projection, screens or a display wall, or by physically moving the environment. This is how dialogue inside a moving car is normally shot, because it removes every safety variable and gives complete control over light and performance.
The choice belongs at the storyboard stage, because each approach implies a different location, a different crew and a different permission.
Roads, Permissions and Traffic Management
Driving a car is ordinary. Staging the driving of a car for a camera is not.
Anything that affects the use of a road — a tracking vehicle running at a set speed, a lane closed, equipment placed on the carriageway, a manoeuvre repeated for multiple takes — requires permission from the relevant authority and generally a traffic management plan, signage and control personnel. In many jurisdictions police or an accredited traffic control provider is involved.
Two consequences for a schedule. The lead time on these permissions is longer than for a static location permit, so a road-based sequence is booked first and the rest of the schedule is built around it. And the permitted window is often outside peak hours, which puts automotive shooting into early mornings and nights, where it happens to look good anyway.
The alternative that removes all of this is a closed environment: private land, a test facility, a circuit, an airfield or a disused industrial site. The trade is access cost and travel against the complete removal of traffic, pedestrians and speed restrictions, and for most serious automotive work it is the better trade.
Reflections Are the Lighting Problem
A car’s paint, chrome and glass do not show the light falling on them. They show whatever is around them, which on a location is the sky, the road, the buildings, the crew, the lights and the camera.
Controlling that is most of the craft. The tools are large soft sources and shaped panels that give the bodywork something deliberate to reflect, flags and blacks to remove unwanted reflections, and careful positioning of everything and everyone that might appear in a curved surface.
Interiors are their own case, because glass reflects both directions: the crew are visible in the windscreen and the daylight outside overwhelms the cabin. Polarisers, controlled interior lighting and, on higher-end work, screens outside the windows are the standard answers.
The practical planning consequence is that a car takes longer to light than its size suggests, and the time is spent on the surroundings rather than on the vehicle.
Preparing the Vehicle
The car has to be prepared to a standard well beyond ordinary cleanliness. Every mark, water spot and fingerprint is visible on a polished surface at close range, and removing them in post is per-shot labour.
The recurring items on an automotive call sheet are a detailer present through the day, a plan for tyres and wheels, which photograph badly when dusty and are near the camera in most low angles, and control of what is visible inside the cabin.
Where a specific vehicle is being filmed — a launch model, a prototype, a client’s own car — access conditions, confidentiality and who is permitted to drive it are the client’s rules and are agreed in writing.
Safety Is a Named Responsibility
Any vehicle action beyond ordinary driving involves a precision driver and someone responsible for the safety of that action. It is a specialist role, it is separate from the director’s, and its authority on set is real.
The same applies to any stunt, to filming at speed, to anything involving more than one moving vehicle, and to rigging anyone or anything to a car. A documented risk assessment for these sequences is standard practice and is frequently the document a permission depends on.
What Sets the Cost
The shooting approach first — tracking vehicle, mounted rigs or a controlled static setup — because each implies a different crew and permission. Then location: a closed environment versus public roads with traffic management. Then crew size, which on automotive work includes specialists other formats do not carry. Then lighting equipment, since controlling reflections needs large sources. Then vehicle preparation and handling. Then post-production, including any clean-up of reflections, plates or compositing.
